A wee update on this - I was at a St Andrew's Open Day today and at the medical talk the guy kept stressing that there were no confirmed plans to change the contract they have with Manchester. Some students do go to other medical schools by applying themselves during third year (quite a few did go to Edinburgh in one particular year but this was apparently just a one off) but the vast majority go to Manchester automatically, and there are no plans to change the arrangement any time soon despite pressure from the Scottish Executive. He said that it's a two way deal since if St Andrews pulled out soon then Manchester would be left with 100+ clinical places and no students to fill them, so if it is to change then it would not be at least for another five years.
Sorry if this explanation was a little bit confused, but I hope it helps anyone who's applying there. The new course sounds really good, and it's obviously quite nice to get an honours degree out of it as opposed to just the old ordinary degree. They also said they make some offers before Christmas which is obviously lovely. Finally, they said that the applicants they ask for interview are either the ones that they're unsure about OR very good applicants who they want to interview to use as a benchmark. Imagine the horror of not knowing which you are!

I've just left St Andrews and I've been accepted into Glasgow 3rd year. I think about 12 people went to Edinburgh, without interview, and of the 11 people who got an interview to Glasgow, only 4 (including myself got in). I think only one person went to Cambridge, and one into Bart's.

Next year, there will be 100 places at scottish med schools for scottish students. (apparently)

Well, looks like your're part of the lucky 4!! Only kidding Edinburgh students...

Sure you will settle in nicely, theres an open day in September. If you've not already been to one it would be a good idea to go along if you can... I'll be starting 3rd year as well, so I can show you around if you like nearer the time, just give me a shout. Same goes if you need to know anything else.
