Electives-too much choice!
Hello, haven't been on here for a while but I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. I realise there is a couple of other threads about electives here but no recent ones so I thought I'd start a new one...
Anyways, trying to pick somewhere to go for my elective at the end of 4th year (i've just finished 3rd year) and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the choice. I've narrowed it down to places where at least some of the population speak english, places where I'm not likely to get shot at, stabbed or attacked by large reptiles (*shudder*) and places where the heat is not intolerable. Unfortunately, that leaves a suprising amount of the globe for choice. Basically, any advice on where to start or how to go about setting one up would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Ailie |

Hi Ailie,
Firstly I must admit I am truly envious of the fact you are going to be jetting off on your elective! Especially with my impending busy medical jobs coming up in August. I completed my elective in Sydney. This was in July 2005 and I had a really good time. The weather was pleasant ("winter") and there is plenty to do outwith hospital work which, I may add, is the most lax I have ever come across. And despite being Australia it ticks your boxes for an absence of beasties. The greatest benefit of going down under is that you can have a holiday too - why go all that way otherwise? I spent four weeks in New Zealand purely on holiday. Other people I know combined their trip with Fiji, Vanuatu and the like. The elective, in my opinion, is an opportunity to have a great holiday. Of course the downside to the above is cost. I would basically recommend you think of what you will want to do in your free time. Happy hunting! If you need any advice let us know.

Yip, free time usage is a must!!!
i'm currently in New Zealand and am basically going into hospital whenever i'm asked to be there (they ain't getting much more from me lol) and doing a little project on the side. weekends are for travelling, getting to see a different culture, and doing what you want. then there's the holiday afterwards, i'm doing the south island of NZ (electives on the north, though was on the south this weekend) and a good few weeks in Aussieland to finish off. decide if you want to go alone or with others, i'm with a few friends and they've been brilliant, and make me feel alot less alone in a foreign country. good luck and let us know what you decide!
