Hi Everyone!
The time is coming for personal statements. I hope this information will help any people applying this year as it can be a difficult thing writing something as crucial as a personal statement.
What role does your personal statement play in
your application to study medicine?
Your personal statement is the second of a possible
three stages the first being your exam results, in getting an offer from a medical school. Your
personal statement will be the key to an interview
or, if you have really impressed, to an
unconditional offer. Bear in mind though if you are
invited to an interview emphasis will be placed on
your personla statement's contents and you could be
asked questions on it.
What about the structure of your personal
statement?
Your interest in medicine should come first.
Immediately show the selectors that you are very
interested in studying medicine before you start
telling them about your extensive beer bottle
collection. Begin by talking about your general
interest in the field of medicine before finally
going on to talk about your work experience. You
should try to sound optimistic about your future in
medicine and even tell them which field you would
like to specialise in (if you actually know) - but
be warned as they may ask you about this at your interview. This would show that you have extensive
knowledge on life in a medical environment. You have
plenty of space to write so make this section a
substantially large part of your statement.
Next you can put in your general interests (medical
related if applicable) and your work experience. Show that you can work in a team and that you have
communication skills. 'Sell' yourself.
Hobbies can come last as they sometime consider them
last. At my Aberdeen interview they talked about my hobbies last, so maybe thats how they do it initially.
Well, I'm puffed out. If anyone has any more input about personal statements that I neglected to mention or did not explain then please add some more input. Elliot says "The thing about personal statements is that they are personal and so as many views as possible would be good."
