Finally- at last, 1st interview done!
It went fairly well i think. there were 2 very nice friendly interviewers. we were seated round 3 sides of a table,s o there wasnt a 'us' and 'them' barrier.
she read my work experience log and record of achievement
the questions- in the order i remeber them!!!
we know u want 2 do medicine. why?
we see u have done work exprience i Newcastle- did u notice any difference between hospitals in scotland and england??
have u seen any consultants at work??
consultant doctors have been shown as arrogant by the media. Have u found this to be so?
Who is the most important member of the medical team?
Are u saying that all members of the medical team are equal??
Did u particulary notice teamwork present whilst on work experience?
are there any hobbies/pastimes u wish to keep on whilst at university?
Can u give evidence of teamwork from ur life at and outside school?
someone in ur group isnt pulling their weight. what would u do??
what qualities does a good doctor need??
any questions?
i asked a question about whether there is going to be a cut in the amount of PBL. tehey werent sure. but this reminded them that they hadnt asked me about pbl, so:
what experience/ knowledge to u have of PBL?
ruth got a mention as a med student who has told me about this (see postin basement!)
thats all i can remmeber, if i remember anymore- ill edit this!
linds got a stinker about 'the bristol case'. apparently somethin to do with a hospital in bristol witha bad track record for heart surgery. luckily, i got no ethical/current stories questions!!
the other people who came out of interviews b4 me said their work experience logs didnt get read- so, THRUST IT into their hands!! thats what i did. dont let it sit there, walk up to them say 'this is a record of my work experience ' and hand it to them.

Hey that poses a good question, there is the possibility that by the time we qualify some major changes will have taken place in the NHS, what do you all think that they will be. Personally, i think that private care will become more prevolent and that we will have to pay, or at least contribute some money towards treatment. So what do tyou all think. Only sensible answers please, nothing like all managers will be trained monkeys, and the typing will be done by super computeers, real solutions or changes that will take place only please!!

But if you are saying gene therapy and using the results of the gene project, you then have to think about the ethical implications.

question here is whether or not you believe that a "healthy" born baby is any more valid than noe born with a disease or disability? Should we play with genetics to make super-babies?

interesting, but i also suppose that to a certain extent that it depends on your religious beliefs, and what they guide you to do on moral issues?

But if the baby has a disease that can be cured through gene therapy while still in the womb, shouldn't we take the opportunity?
Otherwise how do we treat it once it is born?

see the problem though is what is a disease? Is down's syndrome a disease? or is it genetic design? Is playing with the genetics of the unborn playing God? Is it creating the Master Race? Or is it the right thing to do?
It's not possible to say what is right and wrong. You just have to make up your mind what YOU believe and not let your own belief be compromised. you do however ahve to see things from other people's point of view even if they are not your own.
it's basically learning to sit on the fence and knowing when to say that you do not want to be involved. You cannot stop other people, but you can stop yourself.

Anyway there is only one sure thing in all of this debate, we are going to be the ones that make the decisions about this in the future, or at least have a big input on th outcome of any decisions made. So we all have to make a stand somewhere, and hope that it is the right one or that you really do believe that what you are doing is right.
I personally think that gene therapy is going to be the big moral debat of the next ten years, a bit like abortion has been for the last ten years, we are all going to have to make a dcision on where we stand on it, and stick to it.

Talking about babies and stuff, did anyone see that series of programmes about the guy that does the operations on babies while they are still inside the mother?
It was pretty impressive stuff, like giving platelet transfusions and other procedures to try and make sure that the child lived long enough to be born.

I did. It was really good. It must take some amount of courage to take risks like that- from both the doctor and the parent's point of view. Some people certainly seemed to think that he shouldn't be interfering with such delecate matters. Then again when you saw the parents speaking to the doctor with their children on their laps afterwards I certainly think such pioneering work should not be frowned upon.
