Hi, I am going to Monklands on 22.6.09 - has anyone finished their
placement or going at that time - what did you think of it?

I never actually went to Monklands for work experience (didn't discover this site until after I applied for Uni :( ), but everyone who's been seems to really enjoy it...I've got no doubts that you'll see and learn loads!
You'll find loads of useful information on the site about interview questions and the like, and feel free to ask any questions!
Are you applying for 2009 entry?

Hi Jen
Thanks for replying - sorry its taken me a few days to get back to you but
I'm very busy with my A Levels. Exams every day of this week:mad:
I'm hoping to get into medical school this year but I was turned down
without interview by Aberdeen who said that I had submitted quite a good application but because I didn't have any work shadowing in a hospital environment I had lost points.
It's very hard to get work placement where I live and I can't believe my
luck that I am getting into Monklands.
If I don't get into medical school this year I will be reapplying for 2010 entry so hopefully my application will be stronger from the benefit of
work shadowing.

Hope all the exams went well! Can't be long till the holidays now :)
When are you over for work experience?? If you're planning on applying to Glasgow and fancy seeing about the med school, let me know and I can give you the grand tour if i'm about.
Good luck with the rest of your exams,
Jen

hey!! As jen said, you'll really enjoy it....
Don't be afraid to ask questions to anyone, on this site or on work experience!!!
When I was there many moons ago (many, many, many moons ago!!!) i shadowed consultants and thought that they were big scary folk and that they would think i was stupid........
......but have learned from experience that not all of them are big scary folk, and that i no longer care if they think i'm stupid (well for the most part anyway!)...
its all about what you can take from the experience, so go into it willing to learn and have as much fun as you can, this is an amazing chance to get involved with no stress or pressure on you!!!
p.s. monklands canteen is awesome, don't miss the beetroot!!!

Staff members are never annoyed by people who are genuinely interested in what they are doing - so, smile a lot, jump up and down and look interested - the more questions you ask the more you'll get out of your week.

Hey Jen
Thanks for your offer, but I've already done the tour of the uni when I was over for the open day. I got the tour of the Wolfson building and was really impressed with the facilities there.
I had applied to Glasgow for 2009 entry but was turned down without an interview but if I have to apply for 2010 entry I'll probably pick Glasgow again.:)

You should eat beetroot, if only to see if you metabolise the colour or not - great practical experiment in genetics!

I'd sent my application forms in by e-mail a couple of times within the last few months but got no reply so I thought I would up phone and see if I could chase the application....I've to be at Monklands for 9am tomorrow, RESULT!!
The person that was meant to be there this week didn't turn up so i've got his place:)
Really looking forward to it but I thought I would have a couple of weeks to think of a barrage of questions for all the staff there....better get my thinking cap on!:smhat:
I'll let you all know how I get on.

before I go over on 22nd. Good luck and enjoy it - by all accounts its a
great experience:up:
Do you have far to travel to Monklands?

Not too far, I'm in the south side of Glasgow so it's around 15 miles.
Anybody got any info about car parking there? Should I have any problems getting a space?

It's pretty busy, but you'll get a space in the hospital car park before 8.40ish then it starts to become a bit of a fight!! There's a fair bit of street parking around about too if you can't get a space in the main car park, just avoid the yellow lines on the street along the front of the hospital (our lot had about 6 parking tickets between them on our last block!)...
Have fun!

Well done - good to see initiative still pays off. This can also apply to candidates who have had no offers of places for medicine - a well written letter just after the higher results come out explaining that you have got good results, have more work experience (hopefully) and are dead keen to study medicine. Then ask if they have a waiting list that they can out you on, in case they have a space (Two NextGeners got into Dundee this was about 10 years ago) or if they can recommend what you should be doing in the coming year - further highers, starting a science course, getting helath care related work, etc. Then, with a lot of luck, you might find they have a space for you. Definitely worked with Edinburgh for 2 NextGenrs about 3 years ago.
All the best folks!
