Good to see you here
Welcome to the Monklands Next Gen message board. Before you jump in and begin, there are a few things you should know about the message board system we are using here.
The board is run on our own web server and within the limits of vBulletin (who wrote the program which maintains all of this magic) we can make our own changes to most things here. It also means that any information you give us during registration is held only by ourselves, which has advantages for security and privacy. What does this mean in practice? Read on...
The Editorial Team
We currently have a board of nine... Mike Simpson and I (the server administrators), Elliott Simpson and Ruth Elliott (the editorial board) and Damien Begbie, Adam Gilmour, Susan Jamieson, Lindsay McVicar and Adam Marshall (the medical schools moderators). Adam, Adam, Damien, Elliott, Lindsay and Ruth are likely to be here on a regular basis. I'll be dropping in as often as time allows but mainly helping out with the technical aspects of making sure the board does what it's meant to do.
With the members we have here, it's expected that we won't be doing much editing, but if necessary, posts can be deleted. People occasionally wander onto these boards and post messages which are either irrelevant, offensive or contain links to sites you'd rather not go to. The board is set up to keep this to a minimum but if there are any problems, drop me a note (derek@monklandsnextgen.com). As always with internet security, it's a balance between ease of use and level of protection.
The Rules
Well, we're not being too rigid. This is a friendly and relaxed place for people who in many cases know each other, or at least have shared many experiences here at Monklands. There are few formal rules as such, apart from the rules of normal decency. Use your own good judgement. My only advice is in terms of security - don't post contact details like phone numbers and addresses on the board, exchange them by private e-mails.
The first rule is that to post messages on the board, we need to know who you are...
Registration
At the moment, no-one can just wander in here and send posts to the board. It is necessary to register before you can post and anyone involved in the work experience program, students, parents, teachers and hospital staff are welcome to join and add their comments. It's easy and it only takes about 5 minutes. Follow the "register" link at the top of the page.
During registration, you are asked for some information about yourself (see the section on privacy). You must give a valid email address. After submitting your details, an e-mail will be sent to you containing a link which you'll need to click to complete your registration. As soon as you've done this, you'll be able to start posting messages.
You'll note that the registration process asks for a name to identify you on the board. It's up to you whether you use your real name or a nickname. All we ask is that you don't use someone else's real name. You're also asked to enter your real name and this is compulsory. This can only be seen by the administrators. If it's unlikely that Elliott knows who you are, please drop him an email at elliott@monklandsnextgen.com to introduce yourself.
Security & Privacy
Unregistered visitors will be able to read messages here but unable to post messages until they complete their registration. This is necessary to allow us to have some measure of control over who comes here to visit.
As soon as you complete your registration, some of the information you submitted is used to make up your public profile. This information is visible to anyone who visits the board, so please check it straight after registration (from the board's main page, click on the "user cp" button at the top of the page) and if necessary change it. You shouldn't have personal details like address or phone number visible on your public profile. The e-mail address you gave during registration will not be visible to the public, although the board has a system allowing other registered users to send you messages by email without being told your address. Your real name is also hidden (unless you also used your real name as your username too).
All of the details given at registration are held on a secure database which only the Editorial Team and the directors of Scotweb Solutions Ltd. have access to. No outside companies or individuals can access this and your details will not be passed on or sold to anyone else.
The Web Site
www.monklandsnextgen.com has general information in read-only form and is being added to, mainly by Ruth and Damien, as we/they find time to put the items together. Please let us know where you are now, what stage you're at, what you're doing, etc. so we can send the heavy mob out to collect your membership fees... sorry, so we can keep in touch with you and let everyone know how you're getting on. You can either post it to the board here or e-mail it to Elliott (now available at elliott@monklandsnextgen.com). If you have any ideas of what should be included on the site, drop us a line.
Feedback
I hope you all have fun here and find it an easy way to keep in touch with the ever growing Monklands Next Gen community. If there's anything about the board (or the site when it comes) that you like or don't like, please let us know. We hope to be making improvements for quite some time.
