November 2001
Dear sir/madam,
The Medical Careers Advisory Service would like to invite candidates to their fifth annual conference on 15th December 2001. Established in 1996 as a unique innovation of the time. Our ethos is to provide prospective medical students with advice, support and a realistic idea of what a medical career involves. MCAS has gained national recognition and is now working in collaboration with the General Medical Council and Royal College of Physicians in order to help advise those about to apply for a place at medical school.
MCAS has been created by a team of medically qualified professionals at varying stages of their career. Students are given the opportunity to meet and talk with academics in medical education, consultants from various specialties, junior doctors in training, medical students and careers advisors. We thus provide students with invaluable insight into the medical degree and career path to prepare them for what lies ahead.
Our previous correspondence with school careers teachers has shown a widespread lack of confidence when advising prospective medical students. This is further compounded by the aspirational and glamorous messages students receive from family, friends and associates, thus leading to many ill-informed applications to medical school.
The current problem for students is the lack of up-to-date career information available at their respective schools. Entry requirements at each university vary and determine which A level grades are offered to a particular student. The curriculum taught at medical schools has also undergone a radical change. At interview, applicants not only have to produce evidence of their academic achievements, but also face searching questions about their work at school, personal interests and motivation. A very important question is the reason for wanting to become a doctor. These are the issues that MCAS addresses.
I would therefore like to invite prospective medical students and doctors of tomorrow to our upcoming conference on
Saturday 15th December 2001
at
The Westminster University
309 Regent Street
