Just wodering if anyone ever took part in a Nuffield Society Bursary (sp?) and what they thought of it as I was thinking of applying for it this summer - it's a really good way to get some relevant work experience I think, only downside is you miss the first week of term which, for most, is more on the upside!

i'm gonna add something in here because I don't wanna do ANOTHER post.

can anyone tell me about how you would train as a phlebotomist i.e. who would you contact at yoru local hospital? (preferably monklands - or monkies as I like to endearingly call it...)

also, i sent away a letter to get on the bank nurse list, but got no reply. do you think i should just phone up?

thanks

Can i just reinforce those last 2 questions - coz i'm interested in the bank nursing thing and I've heard that people do phlebotomy in the summer holiday as well. So any help would be good!

Phlebotomists are usually organised by the local Haematology Department in a Hospital. In Monklands there are identified posts so we can only recruit if there are vacancies. With a Nurse Bank, I don't think that there is a limit to how many people can be in the Bank.

Try your local Health Centre - lots of these now have phlebotomists and they may be interested. When applying to hospitals, remember to say that you are available on weekends and school holidays - because those can be the shifts that the regular people don't want.

yes, they don't bite. even better, if you're in the area just pop in - when you come in the main doors at monklands turn left (towards physiotherapy), follow the corridor and the office will be right in front of you :)

That's where they USED to be - Medical Illustration has moved into that area and the nurse bank is more or less opposite my room, so you now come to the lab reception, turn left, drop into the room 4th on the left and check that my kettle is full, then look into the room next on the right, then drop back for coffee before you leave!

the western infirmary has a phlebotomy department that is in charge of organizing the phlebs for there and for gartnaval. The majority of phlebs that work weekends are med students, with a few exceptions. I think the royal works with a similar system, but dont quote me on that.
You can either be contract or bank, contract usually meaning that you work pretty much every saturday and sunday morning, like i do (but there are usually extra hours available midweek).
Bank is usually the most attractive option for most people but they are trying to pin more people down to contracts these days so i dont know how much success you would have on that front.
Ur best bet if ur interested is to get in touch with the recruitment department at stobhill hospital and get urself an application form. Once they get them back they forward them on to the relevant people in the hospitals who do the recruiting, and bobs ur uncle.
On the subject of workin in a health centre it tends to be trained phlebs they will take on. One of the girls i work with at the western does a few hours through the week at a health centre in the west end.

I did it not last summer but the one before, which is actually quite scary cause it doesnt seem that long ago. I thought it was really good and I was doing mine at Edi Zoo so I was outside all day + it was a record breaking summer that year I think. Its been a pretty good subject on interviews etc cause I could waffle on about Zebras and what I did for ages. Ive applied to work in an aquarium in california for the summer and that was practically all they asked me about.

Its not very good money when you work out what it is per hour, but because your in 5 days a week it works out quite nicely in the end. I dunno about having to miss the first week of term tho, i got mine all done in the summer holidays. Is it 6 weeks you have to do it for, or is that rubbish? I reckon you should defo go for it.

Hmm, I'm doing one this summer up at Strathclyde U, Extraction and analysis of natural plant products to treat tubercolosis. Seems relevant enough :)

My teacher told me that in the land of yore, the nuffield people only put up £60 a week but the Uni topped it up to £100. The pay is pretty bad but lets face it, you would do it for free for the sakes of experience.

Could somebody actually tell me what a Nuffield Society Bursary is? I'm a little in the dark, sorry :o

Nuffield is the organisation that was set up to grant budding scientists a chance to take part in real (no fronting) lab. research. You join a project for 4 to 6 weeks, are paid 70 pounds a week and at the end you draw up a poster of what you did for a show *mumbles about posters*

Apparently very good to put on UCAS if you are thinking of doing science or medicine courses, and yet another chance to name drop! :D
