View Full Version : Preperation for Uni

Okay, there is a good chance all of you will be studying medicine somewhere next year seen as you all ooze talent (and communication skills - you never shut up :lol ) so if I could go back in time and do something to prepare for the course I would begin with anatomy.
Anatomy is the most fun aspect of the course but it takes a lot of work. So I don't see why you couldn't start learning it right now while you are sciving away in '6th Year' at school. Its easy if you have a lot of time on your hands. You could learn a muscle and its function a day until you start uni and you would immediately be at an advantage. The book below is by far the best way to learn anatomy. I would recommend that you buy it (is about £18) and do it at your leisure. I have supplied the ISBN below incase you need to order it. Trust me, I think it would be well worth it. I wish I had know about it when I was at your stage (lazying around doing practically nothing - well, in comparison to what I do now lol). Anyway, give it a shot. I would avoid the other course components until you get there.
ISBN 0-8053-5086-1
"The Anatomy Colouring Book"
(Wynn Kapit / Lawrence M.Elson)
If I think of anything else useful for you to do before you get there I'll stick it up here. I'm sure there are a lot of things but my minds like jelly at the moment.

Oh yeah, I know this is unrelated to the topic but if you are wondering about conditional offers for Aberdeen, from the people I have met up here, and including myself, if you get AAABB or AAAAC you will get a conditional - I haven't met an exception yet. And it can be as difficult as AAB (all Adv. Highers) to AAB (Adv. Higher and 2 Highers). They also seem to allow you to get a little less than the required grades. One guy I know was asked for AAB in his CSYS's (Adv. Highers now) and he got ABC but they took him in anyway.

I think I'll take Ruth's advice, it seems like the least work - no i'm kidding, but as for the ENJOYING of 6th year, well, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,
let me ponder that one!!!
However, the colouring in Anatomy book does sound rather interesting - do the crayons come with that, or do you have to buy them separately???

I think you need to chill out Damien! Subjecting students to incredibly boring and rather pointless anatomy may just put them off medicine (and colouring-in books) for life!
At most, read a very basic physiology book, but the best advice I could give would be to just enjoy school while you can. The anatomy can wait!

Hey wow!
I'm only recommending it to people who want to prepare for uni. No-one likes studying anatomy all the time but the more you do before you go, the less you need to do when you get there which means more time for pool :lol

I have to disagree with Mark. Much less of the anatomy you learn is pointless than you think. Most of it is essential to what you'll end up doing at work. This is often difficult to appreciate at the time when you're learning it. Yes, there was far too much of it previously but my own experience suggests we're now swinging too far in the opposite direction.
Recently, I've spent time teaching medical students a lot of basic anatomy which is absolutely essential for them to know and which nobody else has taught them. If I hadn't taken the time to teach them the anatomy first, they wouldn't have been able to understand the concept or procedure I was teaching them in the first place.

I know that a thorough knowledge of anatomy is required in order to operate proficiently as a doctor, and although I wouldn't actively encourage students to spend their 6th year studying anatomy, I do have a certain respect for those who want to get off to the best start possible. However, my views are the product of my own experiences and, as such, I would place more store by them than I would the contradictory advice of others. In short, I'm sticking to my guns!
I would, however, agree that the anatomy colouring book is a valuable piece of kit, as is the Human Brain Colouring Book. Just don't use them in public places as you WILL attract funny looks!

I'm also speaking form experience of mental burn out. I'm barely into 2 out of 5 years and I'm finding things tough. For the first time I'm actually feeling challenged by education and I am very glad I spent sixth year dossing about, because the friends and social connections I made then are the only thing that is keeping me sane now. University is tough. Don't give yourself any more of a workload.
I see your point Damien though, I just don't think that work earlier necesarily helps later. It's not a personal criticism, so please don't get offended

Hey Damien I just wanted to say thanks for the advice. I can understand your point and I bought the book yesterday it looks interesting and is an original concept to learning. It also looks as though it can be worked through at your own pace - so theres still plenty of time to enjoy yourself!!!!!:D :) :D
Thanks,
Adam

sorry- im sure its a good idea, but i agree with nicola. weve got 5/6 years of hard study ahead, so we may as well enjoy 6th year as we put in the effort for 5A's and 4A's and a B, last year.

I told you it was a good idea - just wait until next year Adam when you can have all the fun when everyone else is exhausting themselves over anatomy. As I said, a few muscles a day will save you loads of time at uni.
Of course you can still enjoy sixth year! - you'd think I was telling you to start the 1st year medicine course! I'm sure colouring in one page of the anatomy book each day won't have any affect on your final year at school.
Have fun.

I still need my question answered, do the crayons come with the book??? It's an important fact that may mean the difference between buying the book and not (oh yeah, and between insanity and sanity, respectively)
HARRY POTTER ROCKS
Damien

Unfortunately, crayons are not supplied but I do suggest you buy a pencil set with at least 24 colours.
Harry Potter - don't tell me you have fallen for the biggest media-overhyping scam of all time too!

just to be controversial, but I don't think making the movie was a good idea, coz books are about imagination and what I had in my head was not the same as was in the film. That and I don't think they'll finish what they started... it will not work trying to make the whole series of books into films, coz people are going to get bored
I think the same is going to happen with Lord Of the Rings. That's why Tolkein never illustrated his books and never wanted them to be. Fantasy is all about imagination.
Anyway, that's more than enough HP on the board!
Adam
5th December, 2001, 7:20 PM
yeah, I quite agree with u. the film has ruined a lot of the imagination of the book. (i was once recorded on TV aying that books are better than films bcos they allow u 2 imagine. I wont tell u what programme i was on cos ull all laugh at me! :o)
Still, Im looking forward to see my alltime fave book (LOTR) on the big screen. Just as long as its better than the crap animated version. I have a copy on tape (they were bcoming quite popular with LOTR fans in london- copies going for £50+.) I was holding mine, hoping to sell it in a while (i dont want it- lets face it, its total crap!!). I waas in our price in hamilton (buying a copy of the beautiful handbags and gladrags- first person to buy it cos they got it just as i walked in) and what was on the shelf?? animated version of LOTR. Why buy it taped of the telly when u can get it for a tenner in our price!!

5th December, 2001, 7:42 PM
IT IS NOT HYPE
Sometimes, you just have to give in to what the author's image of the book is (as with Harry)
Lord of the Rings, however, has been made without the author as a consulting force (seeing as he's dead and all) so, it's going to be a toss up as to whether it meets people's expectations.
HOWEVER, what's to say that it won't encourage people to actually go and READ the book once they see the first installment - I know plenty of folk who want to go see LOTR but haven't read it....
Adam
5th December, 2001, 7:47 PM
The LOTR is a special book. REally. Red is right, J.R.R did stop any illustrations cause he didnt want them to ruin persons view of the book. Marc (yes THE Marc) was writhing in agony as he watched the first ten minutes of the animated version bcos it was different from his imagination. Tolkein was directly opposed to the animated film, so i doubt he'd b chuffed with this film. (I will nonetheless go and see it- call me a hypocrite if u want)
Adam

As much as I'm disturbed by the image of Marc writhing in agony, I think that we're all just being taken in by the massive hype surrounding the movie.
I'm going to go see it next Thursday! (yup, I truly am a sucker!)

Don't go in to too deep like knowing all 27 major arteries in the lower limb etc. (like I do lol) but just go at an easy pace as you have been doing. Learn a few muscles and bones, its great fun! (yes, sad but true).
