Biochemistry

i was just wondering if anyone knows how much biochemistry there is in the various medical courses? [especially at Glasgow or Edinburgh]

Dont know about Edinburgh but in first year at Glasgow we have a block devoted to biochemistry coming up after the easter hols! We do other bits and pieces along the way. Its kinda essential that you learn some biochemistry i think! :D

There's quite a lot of biochem at Dundee. A couple of lectures a week generally (that's 2 out of 10), but it varies depending on the system. For instance, I don't think the renal block had much , but GI was almost entirely biochem - digestion & metabolism etc.

There's also a couple of pharmacology lectures per system, which is chemistry-ish too.

At Edinburgh, a lot of the 1st term of 1st year is devoted to biochem. They do try and make it relevant though so a lot of it's clinical biochem (diabetes etc). I can't remember exactly how many lectures we had on it (back me up here Ria or Adam) but we did it in parallel with things like Genetics, Cellular stuff, Tissue Organisation etc

In 2nd term the only remotely biochemical thing we did was Acid-Base Chemistry and disorders (this was the term of the Cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal and Respiratory systems).

This term is Renal and G.I. though, and judging by the notes that I've seen already, its mainly biochem.

Out of interest, why do you ask? Do you have a particular dislike of it or are you secretly in love with the topic?;)

Thanks for the advice, I was wondering cause I'm thinking of what subjects to do in my 6th year and seeing if they may help me in first year at some unis.
